C is for Chengdu

We visited several Chinese cities in 2006, including Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province (see also S is for Shanghai). From here, we also made a side trip to Leshan to see the 1200 year old, 71m high Buddha carved into the rock face. We were only able to view it from a river boat, although other tourists were climbing up to the crown. Wannian and Baoguo Temples were also from this trip; Wenshu Temple and the River View Pavilion are in Chengdu which is also where we saw the folk art concert with the Chengdu Faces. The dancers wear masks which they change imperceptibly – though you can see one making a mistake in this YouTube video. Since then, Chengdu has become very familiar to John because he travels there regularly on business – fortunately not suffering from the aftermath of food poisoning as he was on this first trip! We’ll blame another city for that.

  2. Great choice for C – all of these are so new to me as we haven’t made it to Asia yet. I love the opera photo in your collage, so colourful!
