This is my final post on the Lake District houses we visited in March / April. I showed the interiors of the houses a few weeks ago, and now it’s the turn of the gardens, grounds and views.

Sizergh Castle

Sizergh had the best display of daffodils we saw all week! I’m not so keen on the topiary, but I liked the rock garden.

Allan Bank

There was a lovely woodland trail at Allan Bank, leading to a spectacular viewing seat.

Wray Castle

Wray Castle lies on the shores of Windermere and has no fewer than four boathouses. St Margaret’s Church was built for the original owners in 1856, but is not now open to the public.

Blackwell

Blackwell’s grounds would also have run down to Windermere originally, but no longer. You still get the view though – spectacular!

Holehird Gardens

We also visited Holehird Gardens, just outside the town of Windermere, which belong to the Lakeland Horticultural Society. Splendid – until I slipped in the mud round the pond. Oh well, it was our last day. It didn’t matter too much that I had run out of clean trousers.

A to Z Road Trip

A family bereavement meant I had to pull over on my A to Z Road Trip. I hope to be back en route soon.

    I don’t go too much for stately homes but I do love gardens – those pink flowers at Holehird gardens are gorgeous.

    Sorry about your mud slip, I’ve done it myself and it’s not funny but at least you did yours at the end of your break.

  5. So sorry to hear of your loss, also sending prayers across the miles. As always beautiful pictures. I wish we had castles nearby! Sizergh Castle looks wonderful. I love the daffodils and the rooster but like you I’m not so keen on the topiary. All I could think of looking at your pictures from Wray Castle, was “Lake Calhoun has swans and sail boats and I drive by there at least 8 times in a normal week”. Obviously, I’m trying to make myself feel better about the lack of castles in Minnesota. The flowers at Holehird Gardens are amazing and I love the reflection in the photo of the swan.

    I fortunately haven’t fallen in public in a while. But then again, I do 30 minutes of balance exercises almost every day (doctor’s orders). Very glad to hear you weren’t hurt.

  6. These pictures are lovely. I love gardens even if I don’t have a green thumb. I have done the mud slip also and that was not fun since we were heading straight to a fancy restaurant. Sorry to hear about your loss and sending prayers to you

  7. Thank you for allowing me to see those gardens and views from the comfort of my sofa (looking out at misty murky dank weather sweep across the garden!- this CANNOT be June !)
