Geometric January: spirals and circles

Stairwell at Dovecote Tapestry Studios, Edinburgh, 2024

I’m joining Becky’s GeometricJanuary Squares Challenge every Friday with a themed gallery: today I have a variety of spirals and circles, starting with the strikingly decorated stairwell above.

Two more spiral stairwells follow, one in The Lighthouse in Glasgow, once Scotland’s national centre for design and architecture, now sadly closed, and the other in a holiday apartment on Tyneside which we stayed in last March.

For circles, there is just too much to choose from. Let’s start with domes in Glasgow and Manchester:

Other styles of ceiling in Stirling Castle and Plas Mawr, Conwy.

Mosaics, both in Glasgow:

Fairground attractions in Llandudno and at Beamish Museum:

I could go on and on, but I’ll end with two more museum pieces at the Scottish Maritime Museum and Nelson Pit Visitor Centre in Cheshire:

See you next Friday when my theme will be tiles!

  1. I didn’t get back to comment – I went down the rabbit hole of looking up the building and the art work. I was sadly disappointed not to see more photos of it. In fact your photo of it is better than the one on the published site about it. Anyway it definitely is interesting.

  2. You must need a lot of space on your house computer for photos. Mine is full up even with 3 external storage drives and removing some of the early stuff altogether. 16 years on blog land this December I’ve just noticed…….. yet I did a lot of my most adventurous outings and travel trips long before the internet existed. Seen some of the places mentioned here but not for many decades. BSS. bob.

  3. It’s always exciting to see places we’ve been popping up in other people’s posts, although I don’t recall seeing that particular ceiling feature at Conwy Castle. And the weather in Llandudno looks much the same as the day we were there. 🙂

  4. I’m really enjoying the way you’re approaching the squares month with these themed galleries! I especially like your spirals and domes this time, perhaps because they are both architectural forms I find it hard to resist photographing myself 😀

  5. A great photo in the Royal Exchange Anabel, I may be biased but there’s so much to like about that place. I love the Stirling Castle ceiling and the Kelvingrove Street mosaic – whatever it is it looks cute – bur favourite has to be the first photo, it’s stunning.
