Geometric January: spirals and circles

I’m joining Becky’s GeometricJanuary Squares Challenge every Friday with a themed gallery: today I have a variety of spirals and circles, starting with the strikingly decorated stairwell above.
Two more spiral stairwells follow, one in The Lighthouse in Glasgow, once Scotland’s national centre for design and architecture, now sadly closed, and the other in a holiday apartment on Tyneside which we stayed in last March.
For circles, there is just too much to choose from. Let’s start with domes in Glasgow and Manchester:
Other styles of ceiling in Stirling Castle and Plas Mawr, Conwy.
Mosaics, both in Glasgow:
Fairground attractions in Llandudno and at Beamish Museum:
I could go on and on, but I’ll end with two more museum pieces at the Scottish Maritime Museum and Nelson Pit Visitor Centre in Cheshire:
See you next Friday when my theme will be tiles!

They are all brilliant but I was especially fascinated by the last one – Nelson Pit Visitor Centre, Cheshire, 2024

It was outside a small museum dedicated to the surrounding pits. Nothing left now!

These are great. The lighthouse stairwell is better admired from below than it is climbed!

Thanks. Good views of Glasgow from the top though!

I didn’t get back to comment – I went down the rabbit hole of looking up the building and the art work. I was sadly disappointed not to see more photos of it. In fact your photo of it is better than the one on the published site about it. Anyway it definitely is interesting.

You must need a lot of space on your house computer for photos. Mine is full up even with 3 external storage drives and removing some of the early stuff altogether. 16 years on blog land this December I’ve just noticed…….. yet I did a lot of my most adventurous outings and travel trips long before the internet existed. Seen some of the places mentioned here but not for many decades. BSS. bob.

Ah, we used to have loads of external storage drives too but a couple of years ago we streamlined and got rid of the PC and just use laptops. All photos, docs etc are now in the cloud in OneDrive. Works till it doesn’t!

It’s always exciting to see places we’ve been popping up in other people’s posts, although I don’t recall seeing that particular ceiling feature at Conwy Castle. And the weather in Llandudno looks much the same as the day we were there. 🙂

And you are right not to recall it! I’ve just checked and it’s Plas Mawr:

All my photos of Conwy seem to be geographically tagged Conwy Castle (automatically by camera or phone) and as it’s 18months ago and a trip I’ve never written up I just grabbed at the circle and did no further checking. Mea culpa. I’ll fix it!

I wouldn’t have been surprised if it was at Conwy though. There is so much to see at these places and it’s easy to miss things.

Love all your photos but the first one is amazing! Just checked it only took two days to create!! Thank you.

Ah, you were more curious than I was! I just saw it and thought, perfect for the challenge. I’ll add the link here so that future commenters will see it.

I’m really enjoying the way you’re approaching the squares month with these themed galleries! I especially like your spirals and domes this time, perhaps because they are both architectural forms I find it hard to resist photographing myself 😀

Thanks, Sarah – there’s something very appealing about both of those, I agree.

Wow, Anabel. How do you find these photos among all the others in your collection?

A scroll through my iPad camera roll (which mainly has unused photos on it) and sometimes a bit of lateral thinking!

I agree with others. The first photo is wonderful. It almost feels like the web of yarn is moving toward the viewer. Great gallery.

A great photo in the Royal Exchange Anabel, I may be biased but there’s so much to like about that place. I love the Stirling Castle ceiling and the Kelvingrove Street mosaic – whatever it is it looks cute – bur favourite has to be the first photo, it’s stunning.

The Royal Exchange squared up well and was perfect for the challenge which I didn’t know about at the time. I did know about it when I took the first photo though so was able to have a few goes at getting the right sort of angle.

oooh I was going to include that first one too in my collection, but didn’t get a great photo on my phone so changed my mind!

Ah, you went to Dovecote! Amazingly, that was the first time I had ever been. I’ll certainly be going back for their next exhibition though, on the Scottish Colourists.

I did indeed. My step-niece really wanted to see the textiles, and then I remembered you had been and so off we went. Really enjoyed it 😀

Did you see the rugs hanging on the top floor? They were very geometric but as we had spent so long at Modern 2 we got there just as that gallery was closing and I didn’t get a suitable picture. I think that exhibition will still be on when we go in February so I’ll get a good look at them then.

no!! Didn’t realise there was more up there. Oops

There’s a viewing gallery and the rugs by Ptolomey Mann are round the walls. The roof might make the cut depending on what theme I go for next.
