R is for Rome

We stayed in Rome for a few nights in 2003, en route to a walking holiday in Umbria (for the end point of that holiday, see G is for Gubbio). We packed a lot into four days – these are just a few of the things we saw.

  1. Very nice photos! Rome is such an old and cultured city, it´s difficult to capture everything with only one visit. I think the best time to go is either in the spring or fall – that way you avoid the massive tourist rushes, and the weather is neither bitterly cold nor oppressively hot and humid. Hope you enjoyed your stay all those years ago!

    • Thank you. You are probably right about the timings, but as people who work, or worked, for universities, spring and fall are not currently open to us for major travelling!

  3. I love your pictures of Rome. We were there for less than a day so we didn’t get to see very much. Your posts are really fun to read. I’m thinking of stealing your idea for next year since one of my current goals is to organize my photos. I doubt I would be able to come up with a post for every letter.

    • Thanks! You definitely need a lot more than a day. I agree this is a great way to record old photos. I’m much more likely to look at them again on the blog than in boxes in the loft or in their 1000s on the PC. I could do some letters again, but I only have one X!

  4. Gorgeous collection of images from Rome here Anabel! As you noticed it is one of our Dream Destinations so hopefully we will be able to get over to Italy sometime soon to check out these awesome attractions for ourselves.

  5. Rome is a world marvel, as far as I’m concerned. The history and art alone takes my breath away (please excuse the cliche). I’ve spent precious little time in Italy — Rome only one day, which is nowhere near enough. Thank you for sharing such gorgeous images from your vacation.

  6. Ah, Rome. It is one of my favorite cities. Even with just the Colosseum or just the Vatican or just the Roman Forum the city would be amazing. Instead it’s crammed full of so much good stuff it’s impossible to see in just one visit 🙂

    • I know! Even quite “minor” sights by Roman standards can be incredibly ancient and / or beautiful. The churches are amazing too with the odd Caraveggio hanging in a corner maybe.

  7. Rome is one of my favourite cities. There’s just so much to do and see. I was hoping to live like a local and spend a month there this year but plans have changed so it will have to wait until another time!
