January Light: churches
Two churches in Glasgow’s West End, both with spectacular floodlight. Above, Wellington Church (Thomas Lennox Watson, 1883-4) with its splendid Corinthian columns. Below, Kelvinside Hillhead Parish Church (James Sellar, 1876) modelled on the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris.
Linked to Becky’s January Squares challenge – words ending in light.

Grand entryways.

They are. Rather underused these days, especially Wellington.

If that parish church is anything like Sainte-Chappelle it will be stunning. It’s very pretty from the outside so I imagine the interior would be lovely.

I’ve been in a couple of times for concerts: it’s nice but not spectacular. The outside is very imposing when you see the whole thing.

I have to say, I do think old churches are beautiful. New ones, not so much. I drive past a brand-new church every time I go to the animal shelter, and it is truly one of the ugliest buildings I’ve ever seen: grey and orange metal with very few windows. It looks like a huge warehouse!

That sounds hideous! Some modern architecture is good, but not that type.

Lighting on churches always looks so beautiful to me. I love these 2 pics especially the Gothic one

They are very beautiful, I agree, but after some other comments I’m start to wonder how ethical this kind of lighting is in terms of energy consumption.

So majestic, more like a Roman temple.

What fabulous lighting – is this an everyday occurrence or for something special?

They are always lit up. Wellington is from last year. I just took the other one last week.

It is rather lovely, I’m just going to ignore the light pollution!!!

I have no problem with floodlighting beautiful buildings or statues; rather use the energy for that than for some of the useless purposes I see otherwise. Maybe put a ban on office buildings and shops wasting energy. My local council re-did our street lighting and now I can hardly see my way home at night as they’ve replaced our own perfect lighting with ‘saver’ bulbs which have no radius and only serve to pinpoint an area. If you persuade yours to do something, make sure the bulbs are fit for purpose. Lovely pix by the way.

The area the church is in is “heritage” so they have daft wee lamps in some streets. Our street, being modern, is fine!

Jemima was ahead of me. I have an awfully ambivalent relationship these days with floodlit buildings. They look fab as these do but… life isn’t made easy is it?!

Very true, and I’m ashamed to say I hadn’t given it much thought till Jemima mentioned it. However, I’m quite glad of the Hillhead floodlight at night: it’s on quite a badly lit side street on my way home so it’s quite helpful. Better streetlights would, of course, be a better answer.

The super posh private school near us, Dulwich College is a magnificent building but always floodlit. Feels obscene frankly

Maybe something that need a rethink in current climate emergency conditions. I’ll be checking out floodlights everywhere now!

Hi. Beautiful pictures.
The first church looks a lot like the Pantheon in Rome.

You can see where the influence came from for that first one! Magnificently lit.

It’s a beautiful building, though I don’t know how long the dwindling congregation will be able to sustain it.

Much as I dislike the waste of energy floodlighting buildings, I must admit it shows off their beauty.
