JanuaryLight: raincoat
Why am I posting a picture of a raincoat? Because it reminds me of this couplet from the song Big shot, by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, which has always tickled me:
A punk stopped me on the street. He said, “You got a light, Mac?”
I said, “No, but I’ve got a dark brown overcoat.”
I don’t have a dark brown overcoat, but I do have a light mac! On this penultimate day of the January Squares words ending in light challenge I hope you will also delight in the joke. Or maybe you won’t. Forgive me, Becky, for mucking about with your theme.

It’s all a matter of where you put the commas, emphasis, or, as a linguist would say, the coarticulatory factors.

Ha! I don’t have a dark brown overcoat either, but I also have a light mac. And about twenty other coats – I seem to keep acquiring them, despite telling myself to stop buying them!

I have several but tend to wear the same one most of the time! Not the light mac – a Scottish winter demands something more substantial than that.

My kind of humour – very Goonish.
“How do I get out of here?”
“You turn the knob on your side”.
“I haven’t got a knob on my side.” etc!

I like it! I thought maybe my humour was warped but it seemed to appeal to others too.

Absolutely adore your clever take on Becky’s Light theme. Had me chuckling this morning, Not every day that one sees The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band quoted in a blog post 😉

Glad it made you chuckle! I was slightly dubious about posting but everyone seems to have appreciated the joke.

Oh, very good!! You got away with it, in my book. No worse than the one that goes “what do you call a man in a raincoat walking through a graveyard?” ‘Max Bygraves!’………

LOL! I think that might be better.

I went there immediately. I still have my vinyl copy of Gorilla… ah happiest days. Intro outro with J Arthur Rank on Gong was a particular fav!

I don’t think we have vinyl but we certainly have it on CD. I had a feeling it might be the sort of joke you would get: I’m sure we’ve discussed the Bonzos before.

Makes me v nostalgic. Did you watch Do Not Adjust Your Set? That’s where I first saw them, Urban Spaceman et al.

Don’t think so – it was John who introduced me to the madness.

Well the challenge was designed to give us all some light relief during the dark month of January so I think you have hit the nail on the head! Had me smiling 🙂
[When I was younger I always wanted a pale trench coat, but whenever I tried one on I used to look like a lumpy parcel tied up with string in the middle! Not the elegant, sexy lady I wanted to be… ]

Glad you approve, Jude! Quite a lot of things bring a sack of potatoes to mind when I try them on, but I’ve got away with trench coats so far.

The best thing this morning. I’ve had bronchitis now for nearly 3 weeks and haven’t been able o leave the house so not only am I stir crazy I’m feeling unloved and unwanted. Slight exaggeration there! So this really cheered me up. A song I didn’t know so I’ve just Googled it to find the rest of the lyrics. I’m glad to see that Becky approved but I was sure she would, anyway.

Mari, glad to have cheered you up and sorry the “Broon Katies”, as they used to say up here, is lingering on. It’s a weird song altogether, but then the whole band was weird.
