April Squares: Lake Louise
Two squares for the price of one today. Here we are on top of the world at Lake Louise: firstly at the viewpoint looking down to the Fairmont Château, and secondly on the gondola up Mount Whitehorn.
Linked to Becky’s #SquareTops challenge.
Full story here: Lake Louise.

Hi Anabel, I have been to Lake Louise many times although I have never taken the gondola. Maybe one day. Beautiful!

We enjoyed the gondola, though there were a lot of fires that year and the views were very hazy. We had a good hike and a lovely lunch on the restaurant’s patio looking out over the mountains.

Beautiful! This is one place on my must see list. I hope we get there one day.

I hope so – and I hope you avoid the crowds.

Our best bet for avoiding crowds would probably to go now, and that’s not happening! Oh well, it might be crowds or nothing. 🙂

Get there very early in the morning I would say!

I’ll remember that

Ahh, now this is close to home. Lake Louise is beautiful and I’ve been there several times. Although, as others have mentioned, it can be quite crowded at the height of the tourist season.

We’ve been twice now, ten years apart, and the difference was striking.

Love gondola rides.

So do I, they have a silent, eerie quality.

My parents took a train trip across Canada that ended at Lake Louise. They talked about their experience for many years after. Maybe one of these days, we can take the same trip.

It will be wonderful to be able to travel freely again.

Nice shots Anabel. My mother visited Lake Louise years and years ago and loved it. I suspect it mightn’t have been such a tourist destination then as she’s not particularly fond of crowds.
LikeLike
I suspect not! You couldn’t move for people at the main access point.

As you and others have said here, a major tourism re-think may be coming.

One of my favourite places ever!

It’s very beautiful. Too many other people seem to think so too though! Why couldn’t I have it to myself?

Ah! Finally, a place where I’ve been. We hired a car and toured through parts of Canada in, I think, sometimes in the late 1970s or early 1980s and we stayed in Banff for two nights. It was fairly quiet then. Lake Louise was gorgeous and we actually saw a bear by the roadside (it was winter) but my husband was fretting all the time about the gas the car was using, not because of cost but he was scared we’d run out and we at the mercy of the bears.

We didn’t see any bears round Lake Louise but saw quite a few by the roadside further north near Jasper. They always drew quite a crowd so I felt there was safety in numbers and they wouldn’t want to eat ME. We’re all still here!

Isn’t this the most beautiful place? I’d love to have been. 🙂 🙂

Absolutely gorgeous. But busy, busy, busy!

This is a beautiful spot and a very fancy hotel but, as my friend pointed out, if you would place that hotel in a city or a place that was not beautiful it has that look of a hospital or an asylum. When it was built, that look was THE way to construct. Anyhoo, the locale is stunning!

I hadn’t thought of it that way, but I see what you mean!

The Fairmont is HUGE. It would take 20 minutes to walk around its perimeter.
Hi Anabel. Bye till next time.

We tried to get lunch in it but they would only serve people staying there!

It is one of my favorite places. We’ve skied there and the area – my husband’s family used to summer there. Sigh. Probably less busy back then

It is certainly beautiful, but too busy for me these days.

Hi Anabel – it’s a wonderful area to have been … I was there and it snowed in July – such is life … cheers Hilary

Phew! I can look at these photos. Had such a funny turn yesterday! Not been to Lake Louise and not been to Banff either though I did have a job opportunity there!

Oh, good! I’m sorry I gave so many people a funny turn yesterday. Banff is also extremely busy, we chose not to stay there in 2017. A job there in the past (I’m assuming it’s not recent!) might have been good though.

Yes, a long time ago, when I opted for the overland trip. Life would have been very different.

We never actually got to see Lake Louise when we stayed in Banff in 2018 – didn’t realise you had to park and walk a fair distance to get there! We ran out of time but did do a lovely walk round Emerald Lake – the waters lived up to its name it was stunningly beautiful 🙂 Lovely photo of the two of you 🙂

This was 2017. It was frantically busy. The roads to some of the trails closed early in the day because there were too many people. I wouldn’t go again because of that. We have been to Emerald Lake too, and I agree it’s lovely.

It is glorious there isn’t it 🙂

It is beautiful – but somewhere I have in the “been there, done that” category. It’s just too busy. The difference between our first visit in 2007 and this one in 2017 was striking.

I went in 1989 and thought it crowded then!! I don’t think this particular gondola was even there

I don’t know the answer to balancing out people’s desire to travel and the pressures on the environment. If I had come up with an answer, it wouldn’t have been a pandemic though 😢.

Yes, let’s hope this makes people think about the way they travel and how much they travel. It’s almost as if Mother Nature set this virus loose as a wake-up call to us all. Carbon emissions are going to very low this year, but you are right, it’s an extreme way to make a point!

Sure is! But I read of lots of places, such as Venice, where the waters have suddenly cleared. I was amazed how quickly that happened – it shows we CAN make a difference. But it would be better to do it as a choice.

Those giant cruise ships should be banned. Thousands of people descend on places like Venice for a few hours and that’s not good. And it’s constant.

If I’d ever had any desire to go on one of those I’d be cured of it now. They’re just massive incubators for disease.

Me too! Though with my sea legs I’ve not thought about cruises seriously.
