April Squares: Beinn Bhreac
I had some more recent “top of the world” photographs sorted out for the next few days, but the other night we rediscovered a set from 2005 when we were in training for a Very Big Walk Indeed. None of them are labelled (tsk, tsk) but, matching the date-stamp to my diary, on this day in March we climbed both Beinn Bhreac and Ben Reoch in Glen Douglas, which runs between Loch Lomond and Loch Long. That might sound ambitious, but I have also helpfully noted that our total ascent was 2627ft, so there was less climbing involved than on a Munro (Scottish hill over 3000ft). Is this Beinn Bhreac or Ben Reoch? Pressing my detection skills into use again, I conclude from photographs online that I am almost certainly standing on top of Beinn Bhreac.
And for those who get alarmed at the drops in these posts, I assure you that they are almost always far less dangerous than they look. I just like to pose.

Thanks Su! We are chugging along. It’s John’s birthday today and it has been a rather quiet one.

I imagine. Even the simple pleasures like a good restaurant meal seem so far away. I got my first craving for a fish supper last night and suddenly felt very weary of the restrictions.
Wishing John a good year ahead.

Thank you! We ordered a delivery (curry) so the evening was a wee bit different from all the others in this lockdown. Not the same as going out somewhere though.

You had someone else cook for you — that counts!!
We can’t even do that as takeaways weren’t deemed essential services.

It does surprise me a bit. NZ has done really well at containing the virus and we, of course, haven’t.

There are times I’m very glad my parents chose to emigrate here all those years ago. They had family in Australia, Canada and Zim, and I think NZ was only chosen because Dad happened to get a job here first.

She is. I saw something interesting the other day about how the countries that seem to be getting on top of the virus are also led by women! I had wondered if that might be the case, and am not surprised.

Me neither. It’s not necessarily all down to innate female qualities (hello Margaret Thatcher). I think part of it is that to get to the top as a woman you have to be exceptionally good in the first place. Male mediocrities such as Boris Johnson seem to rise to the top much more easily.

wow what a view. Stunning photograph 🙂 not sure I’d look as fabulous as you at this trig point. Just up my road seems a struggle at moment, going to be so unfit by the time this is all over!

So how many Munro’s under your belt, Anabel?

Not that many! And none for a long time. I don’t bag them so can’t say for sure, though I know I’ve done Ben Lomond several times.

Ben Vray-ech would be a rough approximation. Germanic ch of course! It means speckled mountain in Gaelic.
