View from Southwark Bridge
Our time away last week was in London. It was a working visit for John, but uncertainty over travel caused by on-off rail strikes meant that some of his meetings were cancelled. On Wednesday, he was able to join me for a long wander in search of one of my historical heroes, Samuel Pepys. Here, we are crossing the Thames to the Anchor, a tavern on Bankside from which Pepys allegedly watched the Great Fire of London in 1666. I say allegedly, because we came across another location which made the same claim! I hope to write this whole walk up sometime: for now I’m linking to Becky’s Walking Squares.
I love all your old and new quirky buildings. I think London has the most interesting skyline of all the big cities in the world. It was nice John could join you on your quest!
Always fancied going back to London now that the skyscraper clusters are there. That front one (walkie talkie building) has a sky garden bar and restaurant that the public can enter and walk around for great views over London from the upper floors.
We had a great time! I no longer feel the need to visit the “big-ticket” venues but the smaller museums, the churches, and just wandering the streets was lovely.
Gosh I didn’t expect to see a photo from here. Very familiar to me, I worked at an office on the banks of the Thames just east of London Bridge and this was a regular lunch time walking route or walk from Waterloo Station which I quite often did in the morning if the weather was good and the train on time as more pleasant than taking the train.
We used to drink quite often after work at the Anchor (and most of the other pubs on the south bank). A few more skyscrapers than I remember. The building with the two towers is London Cannon Street station if you were not aware.
Ha ha, I am full of surprises! I probably walked a lot of what you describe, including to Waterloo from where I got a train down to Winchester. I liked the Anchor.

I really enjoyed the mix of old and new.

Pepys would have seen a very cramped London too, but probably not as tall!

Just preparing today’s post which makes a point of what he would, and wouldn’t, recognise today.

It just shows how modern London is. The old buildings are overshadowed now.

I do like catching a glimpse of old buildings in amongst the new. Sometimes it enhances their charms.

Yes, we got some good shots of the London skyline that day, which has changed enormously this century. An intriguing mix of old and new.

We didn’t do anything like that this time, preferring to wander about outside. But another time maybe!

I keep saying to the OH that we should have a week in London, to visit the museums and parks etc. A shame he no longer gets to go to conferences!

Ah. I have son and family there, so I have more chances. It’s Glasgow I want to get to know! I’ve only been there once, and loved what I saw.
