The week in Glasgow Gallivanting: 8th-14th April 2024

The doorbells above are the only new quirk I spotted in my walks around Glasgow last week – well, thanks to the excellent Twitter/Facebook site This is my Glasgow I went looking for them. However, there were plenty of old favourites. I’m sure their fans will be delighted to know that the penguins have sprung back into action. I didn’t snap every scenario, because many of them are repeats, but here are those I did. They are getting daring!
The carved creatures of Cairnhill Woods have also featured before, but not for a while. They are looking a little the worse for wear these days.
And the canal and the swans always come up trumps.
This particular canal walk took us past a pub on the way home. Two added bonuses – our friends Jayne and Mark joined us, and although we had to move under cover when it started to rain we got a beautiful double rainbow out of it.
As for the cyclist, he had two scenic rides. On Monday he and two others took the ferry from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay on the Isle of Bute. You can see they had lovely scenery, including views of Arran, but also challenging “cycle ways” which were often just grass or, worse, a mixture of mud and manure. This is fun, apparently.
On Friday the same gang drove to Lochearnhead and did a circuit from there. Again, beautiful scenery but spot the path traversing a stream on two occasions. More fun.
One final image to finish which shows the new Govan-Partick pedestrian/cycle bridge under construction. We are doing well for new bridges in recent years!

Have a good week!

Loving those penguins and the doorbells!
I think I’m in need of a return trip to Glasgow!

The penguins look like they’re having far too much fun! Bungee jumping, tightrope walking and ziplining… they’re certainly making the most of their time 🙂

Hi Anabel – love the ‘pinguins’ – made for happy enjoyment and commenting fun. John’s rides do look a little interesting … but obviously keeps him and his mates cycling along – you do have a lot going on in and around Glasgow – cheers Hilary

The penguins keep us amused and the cycling keeps John out of worse mischief!

Yay for the penguins!! John seems to be almost as daring! I hate to think of how often you have the washing machine on.

The cycling clothes are done separately and I take no responsibility!

What a gorgeous rainbow! And you know, I wouldn’t have known those were doorbells if I hadn’t read it. How cool!

Changed a bit these days! All singing, all dancing doorbells.

Great to see the penguins having so much fun! I especially love the tightrope walkers 🐧🐧🐧 And those old doorbells fascinated me – a real ‘upstairs downstairs’ find 🙂 I had to smile too at your ‘apparently this is fun’ comment!

He was most put out at some of my comments! The doorbells are fascinating in a sad way – such an entrenched class system. We have moved on from that, not enough, but a bit at least.

Your penguins are so much fun. And I’m with you on the bike riding. Even on a flat dry path it wouldn’t be my first choice of activity.

I cycled a lot in my youth but I seem to have lost both my nerve and my good sense of balance! Though it was always on roads and never the rough conditions John seems to like.

The penguins are elevated to a whole new level now. I admire both of your fortitude settings. I was doing some stuff out in the rain today for several hours and decided I still don’t find it appealing. Dry days for me only as a lifelong preference. Glad I’m not a postman anymore where you have to go out in all weathers. Bob. BSS.

They are getting very daring! I much prefer dry too, and also got soaked yesterday – still drying out. Posties today seem to drive anything more than about 10 feet. I remember doing the Christmas post as a student and being sent out on the bus with a huge rucksack I could hardly carry!

That bridge looks impressive. It is good to see money being spent on non car travel infrastructure.

Yes, and as well as this one and “ours” at Stockingfield there is a new one at Springburn too so walkers and wheelers are being well served at the moment.

Mud and manure sounds yuck to me. A d does remind me of a Bad Shepherd’s song called Mud, Blood and Beer. Could be appropriate too..

it definitely could, although he usually waits till he gets back for a beer! And has a shower.

I always wanted to do that ferry across to Rothesay. I wouldn’t bother to cycle on the other side though. We’ll leave that to John. Those penguins are getting very brave!

We did it once by train and ferry, then got the bus to Mount Stuart. A very nice day with no need to cycle!

All kinds of critters abound here, especially the penguins! John seems to be doing some very scenic bike rides. You can see so much while biking, but then you have to keep stopping to get pictures. It’s rather cumbersome to do so. The canal walk looks lovely.

I think the main reason they stop is at obstacles such as streams across the path or cows so stopping is probably a relief!

Love the old door bells, I have a soft spot for vintage door bells and light switches. The visitor-servant divide speaks to the times, doesn’t it!

It certainly does! I love these vintage touches too.

Those doorbells look rather rude 😀I like the fancy one though. The penguins are certainly getting adventurous and I like the carved creatures, especially the deer and the bear sitting up. Lovely scenery from John but how he can think cycling through mud and manure is fun is beyond me 🙂

They are so cute, the penguins. I can see no fun in the cycling either, but I’m assured it’s there.
