  1. The small island (Isle au Guerdain) is known locally as Janvrin’s Tomb. Philippe Janvrin, a ship’s captain, returned from France where plague was rife so his ship was quarantined. He died from a fever and as a precaution, his body was not allowed to be taken onto the mainland, but was buried here. Later he was re-interred at St Brelade. About a century after his death, Portelet Tower was constructed as a small fort.
