Art Nouveau at the Lighthouse
Glasgow’s Lighthouse is a Charles Rennie Mackintosh building that used to be part of the Glasgow Herald‘s printing offices until they moved out in the mid-80s. The Lighthouse re-opened in 1999 as Scotland’s Centre for Architecture, Design and the City. We visited recently for an excellent exhibition on Art Nouveau (phone photos). If you’re in the area and fancy it, it’s only on till tomorrow, so be quick!
We also climbed the distinctive tower, which originally contained an 8000-gallon water tank, for great views over the city’s roofscape (John’s photos).
Finally, some more shots of the interior.
A lovely escape from a wet afternoon!

Think I’lol have a look tomorrow!

I love all the festive colors as well as the cat on the roof and that circular staircase. And of course who wouldn’t love those roof top views!

Thanks – it’s great when they adapt and develop old buildings properly instead of leaving them to rot.

Isn’t it! Some of the best galleries and museums I’ve been to started life as something else entirely.

Ah Rennie Mac. We always indulge ourselves on a fix when we come to Glasgow but i’m not sure be done the Lighthouse. And we were upset about the fire at the Art school though we heard the main features weren’t damaged.

The Lighthouse is in a lane off Buchanan Street so is maybe not so obvious as some of the other Mackintosh sites. It has a display of models of CRM’s unbuilt designs which I really like. The fire service did a great job containing the Art School fire and 90% was saved, though the Mackintosh Library went. I had visited it the day before the fire so was one of the last people to see it intact. However, I hear it’s going to be replaced to the same design.

Ah, I’d love to visit, I am a fan of Art Nouveau, but it is a bit too far away for me 😦
Glasgow has some interesting architecture. Nice photos from the roof. I thank John for climbing those steps for me 🙂

I’m sure I wouldn’t have made it, and coming down stairs is hard on my knees.
