January: Winter Gardens

People's Palace and Winter Gardens
People’s Palace and Winter Gardens, Glasgow

The picture above has appeared on this blog before, but I’m recycling it for Jude’s new Garden Challenge. Her theme for January is Winter Gardens – head to her blog the earth laughs in flowers to see her own entry, and check the comments for others.

What I haven’t shown you before are these photos of the inside of the Winter Gardens, two of which were taken from the balcony on the top floor of the People’s Palace. It’s very green and more spacious than it looks. I’ve been to a conference reception in the paths and clearings amongst the plants, and the café area – which just creeps into one shot – can be hired for weddings, graduation dinners and so on.

If it’s colour you’re after, head west to the Botanic Gardens where the hothouses are a delight in any season. Reds everywhere at Christmas! Disclosure: I’m far too impatient to take photos like these. All credit to John.

Or how about this? Between Christmas and New Year we had a short break at the Forest Hills Hotel near Kinlochard, which has beautiful grounds and gardens. When we arrived, it was dark and festively lit.

And it was lovely in a different way by day.

We had some rather damp walks when we were at Kinlochard – more on them to follow tomorrow.

  1. These pictures are just stupendous! I love these flowers and the first one with the pink and light blue-what kind of flower is that? The Christmas lights make it look like elves live in the forest-beautiful

  2. Was that where they had the light show just before Christmas, Anabel? I saw it advertised, near to Pitlochry, and was very tempted. 🙂 Really must have a look in the People’s Palace some day. Your husband’s shots are lovely 🙂

    • No, this is much closer to Glasgow – it’s not a show, that’s just the hotel grounds. The one you are thinking of is the Enchanted Forest – I’ve never been, but some friends went last year (well, 2014) so it’s on my list. Along with a million other things of course….

  3. PS I love your header photo of the view from The Minnack Theatre overlooking Porthcurno Beach with Treryn Dinas (Logan Rock) in the background!! 🙂 I’ve been swimming there many a time, and have walked that bit of the coast a fair bit!

  4. Lovely photographs. I love gardens- but somehow the weather in Chennai doesn’t lend itself to gardens (and the pollution doesn’t help).

  5. That People’s Palace and Winter Garden is a magnificent structure with such beautiful treats inside. And the color John captured at the Botanic Gardens are just marvelous. But I most loved the snaps from the Forest Hills Hotel. The colors and reflections from the evening images are delightful and the daytime images should be a post card they are so perfect. Just wonderful.

  6. We went to the Winter Gardens on a trip when I was at university. My Mum and stepdad are really into gardens and at some point when they’re up I’m going to have to take them there.

I’ve seen those pictures of the forest at night before as well. It looks like something out of a fairy tale. 🙂
