Happy Hogmanay!
- Hogmanay: New Year’s Eve in Scotland
- Auld Lang Syne: old long ago, i.e. days gone by
- A guid new year to ane an’ a’: a good new year to one and all
As the bells ring in 2018 tonight, many of you will be singing Auld Lang Syne, the famous poem by Robert Burns. It must be one of Scotland’s most recognisable gifts to the world – but did you know it originally had a different tune? Listen to The Cast’s haunting recording above and I swear you will never think of the song in the same way again. I first heard this version in the Sex and the City movie (don’t judge me) and loved it, so I offer it as my New Year’s gift to you.
Here’s to a wonderful 2018 for all of us. A guid new year to ane an’ a’.

Happy New Year.

No judgement here – I’ve seen the Sex and the City movie too (and pretty much every episode of the show. I wouldn’t say I’m a fan, as such, I just watched a couple and got sucked in). Happy New Year!

This is lovely Anabel. So much nicer than the horrible tuneless abominations normally heard here on NYE. Wishing you all the best for 2018.

😲 Never! Which of course explains why you got the name wrong. It was very silly, but addictive as many of these shows are, and I *might* have had a crush on the leading man…

This song will always make me cry! When we first came to Canada my parents mixed with mostly people from Ireland, England and Scotland. My father was the darkest hair, so he would have to first-foot for Hogmanay!
So many good times listening to this growing up.

Lovely memories! I’m not sure how many people still first foot – it’s mostly street parties now. Happy New Year when it comes.

Thanks, Anabel, for the beautiful song.I like the mood it brings to me.
I have to google “first foot” to understand what it is. After reading it, I love that custom (tradition?) I definitely want to visit your country one of these days!
Have a healthy and happy 2018!

I like the alternative version of Auld Lang Syne. Wonder why the tune changed?
(Like most people I only know the first verse 😉)
LikeLike
Apparently the song existed before Burns (he adapted and extended) and he didn’t care for the tune so a new one was sought. Or so I’ve read! The one sung today is definitely more celebratory in tone (and I only know the first verse too). Happy New Year!
