#RoofSquares 1: Amsterdam edition

Becky at The Life of B likes a square go, oops, I mean a square challenge. I’ve never joined in before, but the theme for June intrigues me: Roofs. If you want to join in too, tag your post #RoofSquares and link to Becky’s post each day. You can also see what other people are posting in the comments. Interpret the theme as you please: the only rule is that your main image must be square.
I don’t have time to post daily, so I’m going to post every Friday instead. The roof detail above is from the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. The building in its full, non-square, glory is below.

Hi Anabel 🙂
Sorry, I know I’ve quite disappeared. It’s been quite an hectic first hal of the year and I’m not sure it has settled down yet. But I’m trying to get back into the swing of things.
Hey, I like the idea of this challenge. Such an unusual one.
And I like your first photo. Quite a stately building.

It was a great challenge. I don’t do all that many challenges but this one captured my imagination.

I like your composition of the square photo. It really shows of the details well.

Thanks, I like that one too. It wasn’t taken as a square, like most of the later ones, as I didn’t know the challenge was coming up, but it cropped well.

I’ve often wondered about buildings like this one that have so much visual interest around the top of the building … but it can’t really be appreciated from the ground for the craftsmanship that it is. At least with our zoom lens and digital images, we can focus in on some of it now.

That’s very true! I often think that about medieval cathedrals that have the most amazing details so high up that no one would see them. I suppose a) satisfaction in doing a good job and b) in the cathedral case it would be for God to look at!

oooo – I like that take on it 🙂

Just to show you how clueless I am as an American: The Concertgebouw is mentioned in a song by Paul McCartney and Wings and I never had any idea what the heck it was!! Thanks for enlightening me on that.

Happy to oblige! Gebouw just means building in Dutch.

Ah! I did not get anywhere with learning Dutch while we were there.

Nice roof but I’ve always been more interested in the carvings within pediments which I usually take photos of if I spot an interesting one. I have a backlog folder of them somewhere. A good elaborate example in your photo but it ain’t square. (the triangular bit at the top of the pillars) I assume spires and towers are out as they have some of the best roofs in the UK like Rutherglen or Renfrew town halls and really stand out from a distance.

Spires and turrets are fine. The roof doesn’t have to be square, just the image.

That sounds like a great challenge and you started off with a perfect roof.

Hi Anabel. I didn’t attend a concert in this building, but I remember being in a park near it.
Makes me want to go back to Amsterdam!

It’s at the opposite end of Museumplein from the Rijksmuseum so most people end up there eventually! We’ve never been to a concert either – I’d like to sometime though. Next time!

Love this roof! It shows the detail of the sculpture and shows how much less we have here in Canada. What an interesting challenge

Yes, it’s beautiful. Becky does this challenge quarterly, but this is the first time I’ve thought I had enough ideas to join in.

Gorgeous . . . . . . perfect example of why we all need to look up more and away from phones. They really did know how to create stunning roofs once didn’t they 🙂
Really looking forward to your Friday Square Roofs.

I love that close-up square shot of the roof, and that the instruments are gold while the players are plaster. 🙂
