January Light: Stirling Castle
A duo of square skies seen from Stirling Castle – late afternoon and early evening sunlight. Inside the castle, there was plenty of candlelight and firelight – both artificial, but still square.
Linked to Becky’s January Squares Challenge – words ending in light.

I loved sterling castle thanks for sharing this

Really interesting photos, Anabel. Impressive on how you carried the theme throughout this post.

Thanks! For this one, I had the advantage of knowing what I was looking for and took pictures accordingly. It was just last weekend. Most other photos are old ones adapted.

Excellent photographs. I wont even comment of costs or anything (whatever they are) since it’s been too many years since I had my (young) children at Stirling Castle. .

I looked it up just out of interest – it’s £16 for an adult, £9.60 for a child. That would be an expensive outing these days!

Just relayed that information to my Annabell and her gast was flabbered. Her comment was that it was still free when we were there :o)

I’m glad we have our Historic Scotland membership – we definitely get value for money from it.

OK, I have to see this castle! I love the ceilings and am glad that the lights are fake otherwise parts of the ceiling would get blackened by the candlelight. I love the red/burgundy stenciling and the old candlelabra.

They have restored it to what they think it would have been like in the 16th century. It’s very colourful!

Great photos. We’ve been to Stirling and did the long walk up to the castle but didn’t actually go in. It was pretty busy and I think a bit pricey for the couple of hours we had available. Maybe when we have a bit longer next time.

I love it, and as we have Historic Scotland membership we can pop in for free any time. We thought this would be a short visit but we were there 3 hours!

I’ve been there! They were almost finished restoring the great hall and it was gorgeous.

Yes, I love the way they have done all the colours as it would have been in the 16th century.

Used to be a lot cheaper than Edinburgh Castle. Luckily, I got in for free last open day. Stirling is a cracking wee place to explore.

It is – and relatively quiet on a cold Sunday.

You have me mildly jealous. I never made it to Stirling 😦 😦

Always worth a visit, though I don’t suppose you’ll ever be back in those parts.

Lovely photographs Anabel. I have fond memories of school in Stirling, growing up in the village of Kippen. The castle was always a mighty sight and often visited.

Wonderful! I love visiting Stirling. The beauty of being Historic Scotland members is that we can pop in frequently without feeling the need to “do” the whole castle.

Great photo’s Anabel, I’m just reading a book where Margaret, Henry Tudor’s sister was staying in Stirling castle when she was Scotland’s Queen. You’ve now helped me visualise where she stayed. Wonderful

We took loads more photos which will appear at some point after this challenge – though the Royal Palace where the lights are was built by Margaret Tudor’s son, James V, so she probably lived in something slightly less grand.

Artificial light! Marvellous 😁 You must have a lot of lights in your digital shoebox!

These were just taken on Sunday so I was actively looking! Until Liesbet commented below, I hadn’t thought of making artificial-light one of my terms. You might have accused me of over-egging the pudding if I had!

Seeing Stirling Castle mentioned brings back happy childhood memories when I spend summers with my cousins in Stirling and we used to ‘play’ unsupervised at the castle, which wasn’t too far from their house. I can’t imagine that happening these days!

No, times have definitely changed! Stirling is my favourite “big” castle – I much prefer it to Edinburgh.

I haven’t visited Stirling Castle for years, though I see it every time I’m in Scotland now, but I always think of it as a more down to earth, friendly place than Edinburgh. Edinburgh Castle seems much more formal. But that could just be because of happy childhood associations.

I’ll have to give Edinburgh Castle another go. It’s been years and i might think differently.

Aha! Artificial light. I don’t think you had that one yet. You’re amazing, keeping up with the challenge every day. It’s a fun one. 🙂

I never thought of making artificial-light one of my terms! Missed a trick there. I’m as surprised as you are that I’m remembering to do this everyday. Only 9 more to go!

It’s not as much remembering as being determined and finding the right photos and topics, I think! That must be so time consuming.

It’s easier than you might think! I looked out some photos at the beginning of the year and some have been added since (eg today’s were taken on Sunday with this in mind). Then it’s just a few minutes each morning to put a post together while I’m having breakfast. Multitasking!
