January Light: Ben Lomond

A patch of autumn sunlight hits the Ben from across Loch Lomond. To the right is berthed the Maid of the Loch, patiently awaiting restoration. Linked to Becky’s January Squares challenge – words ending in light.

Gallivanting in my home city and further afield. Words by me, photos (mainly) by him. The good ones anyway!

Gorgeous tones of apricot and fuchsia. Love this shot!

Ah, lovely Ben Lomond. I climbed it once, on the summer solstice, as a teenager, to be at the top in order to watch the sunrise. I think we set off from our campsite at midnight but it was well worth it to be at the summit for the magical sunrise through the clouds.

How dedicated! I have been up Ben Lomond many times but never at sunrise. Once in deep snow which is an experience I wouldn’t repeat.

Someone may have already mentioned it, but there is a small town in northern California named Ben Lomond. When I saw your title, I thought at first your picture might be from there. Lovely image, but definitely not the same place! 🙂

No, nobody has mentioned that! I’ve heard lots of place names in the USA and Canada which mirror British towns and cities, but not a town called after a mountain.

So now I’ve finally seen Loch Lomand. This is an excellent photo, and that mountain in the background! What a sight that must have been in person.

We are lucky to live close enough to visit often and have seen it in all weathers! Or not seen it in some conditions …

Love it when the light just picks something out like that! Almost ethereal 🙂 🙂

Where we were is basically a glorified shopping mall – but the view is great!

This is such a beautiful scene and image Anabel. It was always grey and reading when I went to Loch Lomond 😬

The next time we went, we couldn’t see the top of the Ben so we were lucky here.

I love the cloud formations and the sunlight shining through them 🙂 I know where you took the photo from too as I took one from the same spot – the Maid of the Loch was being restored then (2013) so I would have thought it would have been done by now.

I think she’ll be there a lot longer, Eunice! Volunteers have been trying to restore her since the 90s but they can never raise enough money to get her sailing again. They failed in their application for heritage lottery funding last year. I have been onboard once – they operate a tearoom in the summer.
