Achmore and Lochalsh: two short walks

On the Achmore Circular

On our last day in Dornie last summer we visited the castle in the morning, which I’ve already written about, and did two short walks in the afternoon. The first, the Achmore Circular, took us from the small village of Achmore across some very wet fields to the shores of Loch Carron. I presume the randomly placed bath was for livestock to drink from – or had it just been abandoned?

Our (driving) route to our next walk took us past the Croft Café in Duirinish and we couldn’t resist stopping. Cake! We didn’t choose an outside table, however attractive they looked, because the midges were out – I think this was the only place we were bothered by them all summer.

Our final stop was the Lochalsh Woodland Walk which also took us through the gardens of Lochalsh House. This was a very pretty walk, out through the woods and back along the shore.

We then went back to our apartment for our last evening in Dornie – but we weren’t going straight home the next day. We had two nights in Ballachulish to look forward to.

  1. You’re a great ambassador for Scotland, Anabel. They ought to put you on the pay-roll, or at least give you an honourable position with the Tourist Board! Usual great photos.

  2. Think your right, the bath is most probably for livestock to drink from. I remember our previous Labrador Jake wallowing in one when we went on a summer walk, any water at all and he had to get in it. X

  3. Hi Anabel – what gorgeous views … and just a stunning area – loved seeing the countryside – craggy it may be, but beautiful. Cheers Hilary

  4. Exceptionally gorgeous areas for walks, Anabel. Interesting how everything can look idyllic, yet midges can be nuisance. I don’t know why I crave cake after reading your posts.😉

  5. If that’s the only place you’ve had midges in the Highlands that’s impressive. I’ve been bitten inside pubs, (people bring them in on their clothing) in campsite toilets, in heavy rain and bright sunshine. Not as bad as Aussie ants though. They will find you anywhere outdoors, except the beach.

  6. What a great couple of walks. The first picture reminds me of walks here where we can see the escarpment and I love to go for a walk I. The woods. The home looks so pretty…were you able to go in?
