April Squares: the Cobbler
The Cobbler, also known as Ben Arthur, is so named because the distinctive rocky summit supposedly emulates the shape of a cobbler leaning over at work. Hmm…

On this walk I didn’t quite make it to the top of the mountain, but you can just see a small figure making an ascent on the right of the rocky outcrop above. Anyway, here am I somewhere on the way up in May 2005. Quite high enough to count as top of the world.

We did a lot of hill-walking in those three months, March-May 2005, then it all abruptly stopped when John put his back out and spent six weeks shuttling back and forth to physiotherapy. This was a disaster, because in mid-July we had an appointment with a very big mountain indeed. We weren’t as fit as we meant to be, but we did it anyway. Find out which mountain it was tomorrow!

That guy is truly nuts. I’m glad you took it easy but oh my, a bad back is horrible.

Yes, he’s had really bad episodes about three times and this just happened to be one of them.

I must have absolutely no imagination, or whoever named it must have been on the whisky beforehand. To say it looks like a cobbler is a load of cobblers – it’s a rocky outcrop on a hill! 🙂 🙂 Well done for getting up there anyway even if you didn’t quite make it to the top – and at least you look a lot warmer and happier 🙂

Quite! The whisky theory is a good one.

The first view looks more like a slip-on shoe to me, which at least kind of keeps to the theme. 🙂 I do see a bent-over figure in the second one, though; his back’s to us, butt and elbows pointing our way, and he has a pointy hat on.

I think you win the gold star so far ⭐️! Maybe I’m just looking at the wrong angle but, as I said to someone else, I’m not going back up to find out …

That’s an impressive view even if it wasn’t quite to the top. Ouch for John, the worst thing of all is having a debilitating back injury. I’m keen to see which mountain you tackled next.

It wasn’t the first time that happened to him, and it wasn’t the last, unfortunately. However it was definitely the worst and most inconvenient! More on the big mountain later today.

A cracking hill, better than a lot of much higher summits that are just large doorknobs on remote moors, proving height doesn’t really come into what makes a great peak.

I adit I was quite disappointed at the end to discover it wasn’t even a Munro!

I can never make out a lion and a lamb on Helm Crag, either!

No, though I think I had slightly more success at imagining that.

I can’t see the cobbler either and that rock formation looks like serious mountaineering to me! You are looking much happier (and warmer) in this one.

No way was I going to tackle that! The cobbler is a puzzle. I thought when John read it he’d tut and point out how obvious it was, but he didn’t .

Perhaps you need to be on the other side?

I don’t intend to make an ascent from the other side to find out!

I’m always trying to see shapes of people or animals in rock – and cloud -formations, but I rellay have difficulties in recognizing a cobbler here.

No, I don’t get it either!

What beautiful tops you’ve shared. For a moment though I thought you were abandoning your hill tops and joining me in the height of fashion today!
