Maryhill swans
I always look out for the swans on my walks along the canal. This pair of cygnets still have a few stubby, brown feathers but are turning rapidly white. They were more interested in feeding than posing for the camera, so I couldn’t get them both with their heads up at once. Further along, Mum and Dad were more cooperative, even if they did have their backs to me.

We have had the black swans at the Wetlands for a few seasons, but I have not seen them this – but then, I have not been at the Wetlands much recently.

They’re nearly adults. Last week we were in Ballarat in Victoria. Australian black swans live there in abundance around Lake Wendouree. We saw lots of half grown cygnets but instead of being white like yours, these were grey. And I’m interested to read Becky’s comment about swans being untrustworthy. The black swans can be quite aggressive. We don’t go too close.

It was a black swan that chased us years ago – didn’t get close enough to see what colour the cygnets were! I’ve never seen a black one here other than that, it was in the grounds of a big house so I guess specifically acquired.

When we went to the Abbotsbury Swannery a few years ago there was one lone Australian black swan in amongst all the white mute swans. We asked one of the workers about it and he said it had just mysteriously turned up there one day. They didn’t know where it had come from and they had to monitor it so it didn’t mate with any of the mute swans. It was a very long way from home.

It is nice. We sometimes see them on the River Clyde too, and on various local ponds.

The biggest thrill is the first time I see cygnets. Tiny, fluffy things. It’s amazing that they grow into this in just a few months.

I love swans, I think they are really elegant creatures. I’ve got some in my latest blog post, I had to wait ages for them all to get their heads up at the right time 🙂

It wasn’t – it was warm enough to be without jacket and that was only two weeks ago 🙂

I always used to look out for ‘my’ swans when I lived in Ludlow. Such beautiful birds.

Yes, I feel these are “my” swans too. I get a bit worried when I don’t see them for a while.

Ah. My dedication is obviously defective, I haven’t named them, other than distinguishing “Maryhill swans” and “Firhill swans” depending on location.

Definitely not! I was rather alarmed one day to see a man and small child sitting on the edge of one of the locks feeding the swans. I don’t know if it was suitable food or not but I felt one of them could have grabbed the child’s hand and pulled her in!
