Amsterdam 2023: the KG House

In March 2023 we spent a week in Amsterdam on what I calculate to be our ninth visit. We first went on honeymoon, so one reason for this visit was to belatedly celebrate our 40th anniversary which had happened a couple of years earlier during lockdown, but the main one was to see the outstanding Vermeer exhibition at the Rijksmuseum. I’ll get to that in a future post, but there’s a lot more to write about besides. Despite our frequent visits we always find something new.
We stayed in a studio apartment at souterrain level of the KG House on Keizersgracht, the rest of the house being occupied by the owners who were very nice to deal with. In the feature image above our front door is obscured by the second black car from the right – you can see it more clearly in the gallery below.
The apartment was simple – one large living space with a small kitchen area beneath the front window and a bathroom / utility room at the back. It had all we needed: there were so many great restaurants nearby that we never ate in, apart from breakfast which we purchased at a nearby supermarket, and it had a washing machine which meant we could take less luggage.
The other big advantage of where we stayed was being able to wander the canals at night as well as by day. Absolutely beautiful.
On our first full day we visited the Botanic Gardens and the Old Church. Coming soon!

We’re always for places to stay that are close – within walking-distance that is – to the interesting spots.

Your apartment looks lovely. And 9 visits to Amsterdam! I haven’t even been once. Happy belated 40th anniversary, and I also realize this is from March of last year, so I imagine it is now coming up on your 44th? Looks like a marvelous city to explore. 🙂

Coming up to 43 this March. Amsterdam is fabulous, and very easy to get to for us.

I adored Amsterdam. Our rental downtown was nice, except above a noisy bar/restaurant. Wouldn’t stay there again! Your place looks nicer and so big!

We had bars and restaurants close by, but not close enough to hear them. We’ve been so many times now we have a feel for the layout of most of the centre.

Amsterdam was the very first foreign city I had ever visited. Unfortunately, it was many years ago and I’ve never been back. I need to fix that. Your rental looks wonderful and well-located. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a white sofa in a rental. Very brave hosts.

I went to Germany on a school exchange when I was 14, but other than that Amsterdam was my first foreign trip in 1981. We’ve kept going back though! A bit handier for us. I hadn’t thought of the sofa that way – you’re right! And they accepted up to two children which sounds even braver.

What a lovely place to stay for a break in Amsterdam. Have been once in 2029 ( wow, doesn’t even seem that long ago) and really loved everything about Amsterdam. Beautiful city.

It’s a wonderful place altogether. 2019 seems long ago in some ways because it’s pre-pandemic, but not in others because there are two years in there that just seem to merge into one big blob!

What lovely accommodation in a fabulous location. I love your photos of the canals and buildings at night. Beautiful. I have only been to Amsterdam once and that was in 1993 so I really must get back there some time. I really liked the Netherlands.

Thanks – we loved it. We’ve been on day trips to a few places from Amsterdam over the years but only once explored other parts of the Netherlands – probably around 1993 too!

Beautiful Amsterdam. We had a brilliant AirBnB, and the hosts were really lovely to deal with during our stay. Our bedroom wasn’t that large. We’ve been twice and very unlikely to go again. I’m looking forward to seeing more. Congratulations on 40 years of marriage.

Those canals at night are a real enticement. Somehow daytime Amsterdam and all those bikes do not appeal.

The bikes aren’t a problem, and the world needs more cities like Amsterdam.

I rather like the bikes. It’s the cars that can be a problem on narrow canal streets. I would not trust my parking skills there!

The apartment looks very nice but I can’t imagine having a sleeping area in the same space as the kitchen and living areas. I would love to visit Amsterdam in tulip season and to see the canals – maybe one day…

We didn’t have a problem with the arrangement, the space was so large. Think of it as a big tent! The tulips were just coming in to season so we didn’t go to the bulb fields this time, but have before. Beautiful.
