Seven bridges

Reflections in the Clyde from Glasgow Bridge. No need to count – there are no sevens in this photo!

With two rivers, a canal, a rail network, and an urban motorway system, Glasgow is well provisioned with bridges. Here are seven examples, not including either my favourite Stockingfield Bridge, which features a lot already, nor Glasgow’s newest bridge which will debut in my next Gallivanting post.

NB I’ve just realised that the shot above and the one immediately below were taken on the same dull, but still, September day in 2017 – woohoo, seven years ago.

South Portland Street Suspension Bridge reflected in the Clyde, the river’s first purpose-built pedestrian bridge (1853)
St Andrew’s Suspension Bridge. Built 1854-55 to replace a ferry taking workers across the Clyde and repaired in 1870, 1905 and 1996-8
River Kelvin Ha’penny Bridge. The original toll bridge (1/2d) was built in 1886 and washed away by flooding in 1994. This replacement dates from 2002. There is no toll today!
Road bridge over the Kelvin at Queen Margaret Drive (1870)
Footbridge over the Forth and Clyde Canal which connects Murano Street Student Village with Maryhill Road
The Woodside Viaduct carries the M8 across New City Road and Phoenix Road. It’s not currently possible to walk under it because of ongoing repairs – this is a lockdown image from 2020. I have views looking in both directions, but liked the trompe l’oeil in this one and thought black and white enhanced the effect

Linked to Becky’s Squares challenge, SevenForSeptember. I’ve been posting collections of seven every seven days, on the seventh day of the week, of which this is my last. Thank you Becky, as always, for an entertaining challenge.

  1. Hi Anabel – I loved the red gate in your previous 7 for August … now a variety of bridges … Glasgow a city of wonders … with lots of crossings required … that student footbridge looks to be a helpful one … lovely selection – cheers Hilary

  2. Wonderful bridges. There are so many great reflection shots. I am partial to that blue bridge, but the brick one also gets a vote. The last one in the viaduct plays with your brain for sure!

  3. Lovely reflection shots. It’s amazing how fast time goes by in blog-land. Many times I’ve thought ‘I’ve been here before a few years ago.’ only to look it up and find it was 7 or 8 years ago. Always surprises me that. Bob. BSS.

    • Thanks, Jude, the viaduct does work well in black and white. You are right about the roar of the M8 traffic overhead but I have no idea when that will be experienced again. They keep extending the time it will be closed – I think they would have been cheaper knocking it down and starting again.

  4. A great selection of bridges, I like the reflections and think the last one should be in a contemporary art exhibition. If I had to pick a favourite it would be the suspension bridge for the colour 🙂
