Washing lines of Malta

While I sort through the hundreds of photos from our recent trip to Malta I’m sharing a few posts with snapshots of generic themes that I like to look out for.
I learned to take an interest in other people’s washing from Andrew Petcher of Have bag, will travel who, for a while, ran a series of Monday washing lines. In fact, Andrew’s posts about his trips to Malta are amongst the things that made me want to go there, so double kudos to him! I’m not sure my washing lines will meet his exacting standards though.
A few more from Gozo:

These are from a street corner in Valletta. I love the door too, which I’m sure will feature again.

Possibly my favourite washing line was in St Catherine’s Monastery – the same place we met the plant pot cat in my previous post. Are these the nuns’ smalls?

A few more from Valletta:

And finally, we crossed the harbour one day to Vittoriosa.

Since I’ve introduced the subject of doors I think I’ll do them next. Coming soon!

I caught one of these photos in Dubrovnik- the laundry was bright and cheerful and brought a pop of colour to the stone. I never thought to look again for more. What an interesting look at a culture and not at all invasive.

It certainly looks like a place with character, Anabel. It’s somewhere I’ve often fancied too and Andrew has done some excellent guides (he was here just a few weeks ago and we had supper together). Looking forward to your explorations xx

Washing lines were one thing that stood out for me on our very first visit to Europe. I still remember smiling at the ingenuity of some. Malta looks an interesting place to visit.

Malta was lovely. I loved the washing lines, some in unexpected places like the monastery and the one hanging over steps.

Love the variety of lines and the garments on display! My washing on the line was wetter when I brought it in today than when I pegged it out…these showers!!! Oh for the Malteses sunshine!

Not sure I would dare hang anything out at the moment!

I do love a Mediterranean washing line. And Andrew is, I see, ecstatic – if also a little critical.

Well, I could not expect to pass 100%! I think I got away with it though.

I love this idea of themed collections of images from a trip, as I often find myself doing similarly, but I don’t think I’ve ever collected so many images of washing lines! I love these, especially the ones in Valetta 😀

Nor have I, but once I started spotting them I kept seeing more. Had it not been for Andrew’s posts I probably wouldn’t have thought anything of them.

I like thesse not least because of the architecture in the images

Yes, I think the washing sets that off.

I’d probably get arrested or punched if I tried that on my coast walk. 😂

I think on your walks some of these washing lines would end up out at sea!

I didn’t know quite what to expect when I first saw the title, but this is good fun!

It was fun to put together! And it gives a flavour of the place architecturally too.

It’s the first time I’ve spotted so many washing lines but Andrew is an expert.

I love these photos and love seeing the laundry hanging from windows and Doors. I love that corner sculpture of Gabriel( ??) killing the demon.

Oh, well done – I had no idea what the sculpture was! However, apparently it’s St Michael.

Laundry on the line … an unusual theme and, why not! I look forward to your door theme.

Why not indeed? If they’re hanging over the street they are public anyway. The doors are already getting out of hand – some culling required I think.

Well I would never have thought to do a study of washing lines 😀

Colourful bedding and towels might be okay but I wouldn’t want to photograph people’s clothes, especially if they were underwear. My favourite bit is the sculpture on the corner of that building in Valetta, do you have a better photo of it?

No, I don’t think so. There were lots of sculptures, but we didn’t take a camera with us, just our phones, so very few close-ups of things like that.
