Geometric January: in the garden

Becky has started a new Squares Challenge – Geometric January. It runs daily, but I have decided to do a themed post every Friday starting with geometry in the garden. This was inspired by our recent visit to Drummond Castle in Perthshire, as seen above, which is one of Europe’s most important and impressive formal gardens and which dates back to the 17th century. Here are closer views of a few of its geometric shapes.
And here are a few more gardens which have used geometry in various ways. Locations are in the captions.
Next Friday I’ll be looking at some shiny new buildings. See you then!

Hi Anabel – it’s amazing what can be created … and in those days too … gorgeous – looking forward to others in the months ahead – cheers Hilary

Beautiful gardens and photos. I like your idea of themed posts for Becky’s challenge.

Thanks Natalie. I find a weekly theme easier than posting daily.

What a lovely collection of gardens! I particularly like Drummond Castle gardens and its intricate geometric shapes, they’re very striking. They must employ a lot of gardeners to keep them looking that good.

A huge team I hope! Or a very hard working small team.

This is a beauty! I can’t imagine how much work it takes to keep it all neat and tidy.

So much work! It was immaculate (and always is).

Hi, Anabel – ‘Geometry in the Garden’ is a fabulous title – with awesome photos to go with it. I look forward to your upcoming Friday posts on this theme.

Enjoyed all the geometric garden scenes, especially the Drummond, of course. But you also found some other clever designs. What is the insect one about?

I was intrigued by the insect garden. Quite a lot of parks now have bug hotels, but this one was quite randomly placed on a grassy area between a road and a railway. I think someone has just decided to create their own bug environment with all the different shapes. The tilted garden on the top was the icing on the cake!

What a lovely garden. So different from the randomness of mine. 🙂

And mine! (In my case, for randomness read total neglect).

There is something magical and very ordered about formal gardens that I enjoy. Even in winter it looks stunning.

The symmetry appeals to me very much. Our previous visits have been in summer when it is even lovelier.

The insect hotel is a little wonder.

It is, someone has gone to a lot of trouble with that.

This is a good way to do it, Anabel, and Drummond looks like the ideal subject.

Thanks Jo – Drummond fits the bill entirely! And joining in weekly is quite enough for me at the moment.

Always fancied going there when I was doing cycle trips in the area but never got around to it. Too many hills to bag in that district. Looks well maintained. Far better than the current state of our potholed roads in the UK. They obviously can budget well for yearly repairs. Less craters seen on the moon at the moment cycling in my local district. Really dangerous for motorbikes as well I’d imagine. Is it a hazard on the rural roads as well around that area? D.C? Bob. BSS.

It’s very well maintained, even in winter! I agree the roads are atrocious. Round Drummond though, the roads were so small and obscure they had grass growing up the middle in some cases!

That’s almost too much geometry! Imagine being the gardener

I can’t even look after my own little patch. However, I suspect they have quite a team!

I would love to follow in your footsteps and visit every one of these amazing gardens.

my first thought was about the number of gardeners needed!!
Loving your themed approach, and isn’t this a fabulous garden.

It’s just gorgeous. We spotted a gardener on the day we left (27th) so they were back at work already.

Not surprised, must take lots of work to maintain this, let alone wrap everything up in the winter!

Great geometry and symmetry in these shots 🙂 The Drummond Castle looks particularly impressive considering this is winter!

They obviously work hard all year round – not a leaf out of place! I do like symmetry.

It’s actually day-trippable from Glasgow – even though we stayed at Drummond for a week it’s only about 50 miles from home!

Great photos … is this linked to Blair Drummond, or is that a different estate?
I really loved the photo of the Woodland Community Garden. Such vibrant colours

It’s about 20 miles away. I don’t think there’s any link now, but I suspect originally it all belonged to the same Drummonds! The Woodlands garden was one of those serendipitous discoveries when you walked down streets you didn’t usually frequent in lockdown.

Drummond Castle garden looks amazing. I quite like symmetry in the garden! It must take the gardeners, in all the gardens, such a long time to keep them all looking so wonderfully tidy!

It must do – even in winter it is all beautifully trimmed. We didn’t see anybody working when we stayed over Christmas, obviously, but on the day we left (27/12) we spotted a gardener.

I love the first photo, that garden is gorgeous and will probably look even more so with some sunshine and blue sky. Brockhole looks nice too 😊

Thanks Eunice. We have visited Drummond before in summer and it is even more beautiful. Not just the plants, but all the statues are unveiled. They all had their winter jackets on!
