Glasgow Gallivanting: February 2025

The image above was taken across the Clyde on the last evening of February. We were on our way to a whisky tasting with a difference in Glasgow Science Centre.
Before each dram, Rory from the Good Spirits Company told us about the whisky and the distillery it came from, then Stewart from the Science Centre took us through the various branches of science and how they impacted on distilling. For the final dram we went into the Planetarium to drink under the stars. A great night! Here are a few other shots of the Clyde on our walk home.
Throughout the month I continued to spot street art around the city. These two Glasgow characters are on Miller Street: Rab C Nesbit, a comic TV character played by Gregor Fisher, and Robert the Robot, a 1980s street performer.
Coming out of the back of Princes Square into Springfield Court one day I realised I had never photographed As proud as by Shona Kinloch – the title refers to the peacock peering from behind the man’s legs. Leaving the Court, I also noticed a rather colourful zebra.
When visiting a friend on the Southside I spotted a colourful new mural on our way to the coffee shop. Unfortunately, a woman on her phone resolutely blocked the portion with the title Welcome to Pollokshields and it was too cold to hang about until she moved!
More locally, the Maryhill elephants have had a makeover. Not street art, but I don’t know where else to fit it in – on a visit to Waterstones on Sauchiehall Street I was pleased to see the staff have a sense of humour. The shelf heading reads Store Highlights – I don’t think so!
The cyclist has been out and about. Some days there were more hazards than others.
But usually there was beautiful scenery.
A huge part of the month has been taken up with preparing for my exhibition at Maryhill Burgh Halls which is almost ready to open. Next month I’ll be able to show it to you, but for now here’s another taster of some of the items which will be on display.
Happy March!

Hope the exhibition’s first week is going well – your February is much more exciting than mine of dust, holes and singing builders!

At least they are happy in their work! And think of the lovely kitchen you will have at the end of it. Off to the exhibition again this afternoon – every one I know is being taken to see it whether they want to or not!

Not a lover of whisky but looks like a wonderful evening. The murals are a fantastic find. I suppose you could have said to that woman, do you want to be in my photo 😁.
Wow your own exhibition, very exciting

My other half would definitely have been up for the whisky tasting and I expect would have staggered home, via a pub too! Good luck with your exhibition. 😊

We did manage to steer clear of any pubs! The exhibition opens on Tuesday, I am very excited.

The elephants are cute! They disappeared when there was building going on nearby and I was worried they wouldn’t come back, but they did.

Always love all the street art. Rab C is very arresting! Are those Maryhill elephants by Mark Bonnar’s father Stan? They are charming! I was very sad to discover that the Glasgow eye on Dram in Woodlands Road has been painted over. Very glad I took a photo to remember it.

Yes, I think they are Stan Bonnar’s. I have photographed them in various colours over the years. They disappeared for a while when they were building new flats nearby – I was glad to see them back. I saw your comment just as I was going into town this morning, so I decided to go the Woodlands Rd route to see what Dram looked like. It seems to have been completely repainted so perhaps they’ll put something else on that wall now. I hope so! I’ve got a picture of the eye too somewhere.

Hi Anabel – I’d love to know more about the science (simplistic!) … what a fun evening – even though I don’t personally like whisky. Love the images you’ve shown us … and that statue with the cock peering out … ‘As Proud As …’. Love the zebra – cheers Hilary

The science was quite easy to follow! He divided it into geography, chemistry, physics, biology and maths so there wasn’t much on each.

It was, although on the 6th dram, in the dark, leaning back – could be dangerous. Fairly sure somebody snored, but it wasn’t us!

Night time reflections. That’s one of the real assets of the city. Funnily enough I photographed those same murals a month ago but I’ve not posted them yet. After 16 years having a deserved break from posting every week…. and enjoying it. Bob. BSS.

The reflections really are lovely round there – I like it in the daytime, but at night it really comes into its own. I’m trying to keep to posting once a week but sometimes it’s a struggle!

Don’t you hate it when people – ignorantly and unpurposeful – block the exact thing you’re trying to photograph? Whether it is by needing twenty photos taken of them in front of the site (while a couple would and should be enough) or, like a few weeks ago, when they decide to sit right next to a major statue to drink their mate (herbal drink). I couldn’t wait for them to end that leisure activity either.

It’s annoying, definitely! Particularly when it’s selfish or thoughtless. To be fair to this woman, she probably had no idea.

You did very well to hold the camera so steadily for the beautiful night shots as you walked home. As usual, I have been very impressed by the cyclist’s ability to get out and about in all conditions

Thanks. Just my wee iPhone – not too hard to hold, and they came out quite well. As for the cycling – madness!

Your photos are certainly informing me about Glasgow! I never imagined it would have so many amazing buildings, art works or whisky tasting ideas…all brilliant. looking forward to seeing your exhibition posts. Take care of that ‘cycle man’ with those trees!!

Glasgow is full of surprises! I always tell the cyclist to take care as he goes out, and I think he does – most of the time!

The whisky tasting sounds interesting, did you walk home or stagger back? 😉😀 Lovely scenery from the cyclist and some very colourful murals – I think I would have asked that woman to move if she was in the way of a good shot 😊
