January Light: lightship
Another guiding-light today – not a lighthouse, but a lightship. North Carr is the last remaining Scottish lightship and has been moored in Dundee since 2007. Linked to Becky’s square photography challenge, January Light, words ending in light.
The North Carr looks like it has seen many days on the water. I Googled the definition of a lightship and learned how it played an important role in safety. See, Anabel, I learned something new from you, again.

Good! I’m glad. Another commenter suggests there are plans to restore it, which is great.

I didn’t even know there was such things as Lightships. Fancy that! X

I think this is the first one I’ve come across.

Guiding-light can cover a multitude of sins, can’t it, but I personally would have excused lightship because it’s a lovely old thing. Boats are female, aren’t they? 🙂 🙂

I believe they are. Becky is very forgiving of our multitudes of sins.

I’ve seen no sinning yet . . we apart from the odd oblong!

And I haven’t yet committed that error!

It looks like it could do with some TLC, and it’s worth it.

Yes, I hope it gets some and they don’t leave it to rot.

How wonderful to see this. My late brother spent a long time with fellow volunteers restoring this.

He did a lot of work with the Taymara Charity, based in Fife. I read a few months ago that they applied for a grant of £1 million to fully restore the North Carr Lightship.

That would be excellent – I hope they succeed. Thanks for the link too.

If you’re ever over that way, they run great dolphin watching trips.

I think so. It’s labelled “Apex” which was the hotel we were staying in right opposite, but I don’t know if they plan to do anything with it.

It would be a shame to just let it rust away.

It would!

Amazingly there are still some active lightships in British waters, all unmanned of course these days

Question is there a gender free version of unmanned? One of those words that needs to be gender free me thinks

When I started my last job I carefully went through all documentation and changed all references to manning to staffing. So unstaffed? I was firmly told that to man is from the Latin for hand, manus, but I didn’t care. It’s the impression it gives.

Exactly!
and unstaffed sounds a bit odd for a lightship, however sooo much better than unmanned. So I’ll use that and maybe see if I can amend the Wikipedia entry!
PS and whoever told you seems to forget that just because it is Latin doesn’t make it ok! Gender bias has been around a long time, thinking of Medusa, Philomela, Khana, Lavinia and many other females in ancient tales and myths

PS and you are an inspiration for doing what you did!

What are you two like? 😂
Could use ‘unhanded’ I guess, keeping with the Latin meaning.
