Advent Day 12: Fairytale of New York
On Christmas Eve 2019 we took a stroll to the nearby area of Scotstoun to view its Living Advent Calendar. Each evening in December, one more window had been illuminated. On the 24th, we got to see them all.
Number 12 – It was Christmas Eve babe, in the drunk tank… any chance to see the late, lovely, Kirsty MacColl.

Love it. Never heard that song before. Great song!

It plays every Christmas here, and there’s always a controversy about the use of the word f*ggot.

Oh, I missed that word. It is so derogatory, as so many words in our language are! Just think how things might be if people didn’t feel the need to look down at other people!

It usually gets dubbed, or some radio stations refuse to play it.

Hi Anabel – fun window to see … so true to what we imagine. Kirsty MacColl had the most beautiful voice .. such a sad end … take care – Hilary

Yes, she made singing sound so easy.

I’m not familiar with The Pogues, but enjoyed the video and the advent window tribute. So sad that she died that way and so young.

Yes, it was a shocking tragedy. One of those that I can remember where I was when I heard it (driving to Edinburgh).

Love the window and the song. Two amazing voices.

An inspired choice! I love that they didn’t just call the window Fairytale of New York but left you to work it out.

Yes; subtlety is much more fun.

Thanks for including Fairytale of New York by The Pogues. It’s a nice rough contrast to the prettiness of the windows and sits well in 2020. I saw Shane McGovern many years ago when he was in his heyday and hated him but now I’ve mellowed and accept him for what he is. Never saw Kirsty but have several of her records. I think it was Kirsty who was on that marvellous TV show a few years back, where she sang Miss Otis Regrets? Am I right?

You’re right, he is what he is and there’s no-one quite like him! I didn’t see the TV programme you mention, but she certainly sings Miss Otis Regrets on one of the albums I have.

It was a programme that also featured Paolo Nutini, another of my favourite singers, singing Buono Sera, Signorina, Buono Sera – a fantastic cover of the old Louis Prima song and she was dressed in tartan and looked ravishing. I had kept it on ‘record’ for ages but wiped it quite recently and now I’ve looked but it’s not listed anywhere.

Great song… thought I recognised it 🙂

Yes, I like it better than the more schmalzy Christmas offerings.

A really well done cityscape and did not expect the words or this song.

Hi, Anabel – Each window is so different and so powerful.
I would have loved to have been there!

I was constantly in awe at what people came up with.

Real good. The green structure is the Chrysler Building, which isn’t green in real life. It is one of New York’s greatest skyscrapers.

A bit of artistic licence there!

That’s a nice one. Different. You may remember Sinead o Connor attempted to steer/ keep Shane on the straight and narrow/sober path…. don’t think it worked. Even reading about it at the time I thought… no way.

Unfortunately not a song I like, I can’t stand the guy’s voice, but I do like the window 🙂

I do like the Pogues and wish I had seen them in their heyday. I did see them a few years back when Shane McGowan stumbled out occasionally and sort of sang propped up on a stool. I never saw Kirsty McColl unfortunately, though I have several of her records.
