January Squares: Up
Becky has been running her daily Square Challenge throughout January with the theme of Up. I’ve been too busy completing my Fife posts until now, but I thought I’d chuck in a few ideas before the end of the month. A guest appearance, if you like. The first images are all Glasgow, starting with lit UP, above, which shows the lamps on Kirklee Bridge late on a winter’s afternoon.
Close by in Clouston Street I found strung UP. Did three people walk home shoeless?
Stepping UP to Maryhill we find Stair Street which is, literally, a flight of stairs and nothing else.
Also in Maryhill is this once fresh mural, now covered UP. The tweet below shows how it used to be.

Once UPon a time – this fairytale in Hamiltonhill is made UP.
Looking UPhill at Gardner Street in Partick.
Gulls lined UP on the railings at Glasgow Harbour.
Moving out of Glasgow, this view of Paisley Town Hall reflected in the White Cart Water is UPside down.
UP in the air on the Fife coast.
And finally, a beautiful memory from our Hebridean hop a few years ago: Scarista beach on Harris. John has his trousers rolled UP and is contemplating a paddle.

I remember having to parallel park on a hill for my driver’s test when I was sixteen. The trick was to angle the wheels toward the curb while also ending up in the right position in the parking spot. Looking at this photo of Gardner Street, it looks like hardly anyone turned their wheels toward the curb. Maybe that’s not a rule there?

I don’t think that’s a rule, though it might be sensible!

I’ve never understood the “thing” with suspending shoes from cables over the road. Seems to be more an American thing, but I still don’t know why!

Me neither! It’s bizarre. Maybe just the challenge of being able to do it.

I think you did a great job with the “up” challenge!

Hi Anabel – loved all of these … lots of ups and then downs … clever designations. The lamps are just delightful to lighten up a grey morning down south! Excellent … stay safe – Hilary

Thanks Hilary, I enjoyed putting this together.

Well done! You’ve made a great contribution. I always wonder when I see shoes strung up on a wire how they got there in the first place. I bet I couldn’t toss a pair up there if I tried all day.

No, me neither! As I said to someone else, I’d probably end up smashing a window.

Nice set of photos. I wonder how often they have to go round clearing the wires of shoes. Latest herd instinct trend seems to be leaving assorted colourful items in parks around trees “for the fairies.”. There’s usually a D.I.Y fairy trail In nearly every park and green area with trees I go into now. Some are pretty and well done -others are just a new form of litter… around trees. Luckily not enough loose pebbles and stones in parks to build statement cairns or we would have them as well every ten feet -no doubt spelling out Save The Planet in giant letters. Happy days.

Yes, we’ve come across a lot of fairy doors etc recently too. I did like the snakes of stones that appeared during the first lockdown. They had some significance.

Great selection of photos! I love all of your different takes on the “Up” theme. Those gulls are fabulous (glad you weren’t underneath them looking up with your camera 🙂 )!

Thanks Janis! Definitely best not to get underneath the gulls …

I think you’re excused for not joining in sooner 😉 Like the street shot with the cars and pleased I don’t have to move one of those cars!

No, I would not like to live on that street! I refuse to walk up or even down it now, it hurts my ankles too much.

Loved the line-up of gulls but loved the lanterns against that fabulous sky even more.

The gulls are John’s (they were very well behaved for a change!) and the lamps are mine – chosen specifically for the challenge because I thought they’d make a beautiful Lit Up. And they did!

Hooray for a last minute appearance! I have to love the first one, but what a shame about that smiley house 😦

It does look rather sad now. I was glad to find the image of what it should look like.

A great collection of ‘ups”, I like the seagulls but my favourite just has to be the first shot, it’s lovely 🙂

I like that too. It and the shoes were taken deliberately for the challenge, the rest are recycled!

Excellent. I thought I recognised the mural with the sunshine. It’s near Firhill, isn’t it? I love the reflection of Paisley Town Hall too!

It is near Firhill, yes. John did the Paisley reflection.

That is a steep street, Anabel! It reminded me of San Francisco. And, I love those stair passages connecting different levels in hilly cities. Funny about the shoes. I’ve seen this is several places over the world, but am still wondering why people do this… Any idea? Creating art with discarded shoes?

Glasgow has actually played San Francisco in the movies before – partly the hilly streets and partly the grid layout in the city centre. I can only think the shoes are some sort of challenge – though with my aim, I’d probably end up breaking someone’s window!

That’s a great collection of squares. I remember when it was a thing a few years ago to throw pairs of shoes up onto wires. We had a large collection of them in town. I hardly see them now.

I’ve seen them elsewhere, but not in Glasgow before. However, they presented themselves at a very opportune moment when I was thinking about square ups!

Hi, Anabel – Great photos (as usual). I especially love the shoes on the wire. That is a very common sight on the Camino trails. Once again, it made me long for t-r-a-v-e-l! 😀

Thanks Donna! I’ve seen shoes over wires elsewhere, but never in Glasgow. It’s just a normal, residential street so I’m not sure what the significance is. Just the challenge of getting them up there?

What a fun collection of photos. The fact that a mural that looked fresh in 1981 already looks like one of the ghost signs you collect somehow makes me feel really old.

It’s quite sad, isn’t it? Coincidentally, we took that picture then a few days later I spotted the tweet. I think they’d have been better painting over it when they built the new flats.
