SquaresRenew 3: Linen Hall and an old friend
We spent a very enjoyable first morning in Belfast at the Linen Hall Library. Founded in 1788 as the Belfast Library and Society for Promoting Knowledge, it is the oldest library in Belfast and the only remaining subscription library in Ireland. I loved the old signage at the entrance.
Visiting interesting libraries is obviously one of my things, but this time I had another purpose – to renew my friendship with Sam, the Librarian. We worked together in Glasgow in the mid-1990s but have had only sporadic contact since she returned to her native Northern Ireland. Sam was very generous with her time, gave us a fascinating tour, and showed us some of the library’s treasures, but the best bit was the way the years fell away as we chatted.
Part of Becky’s SquaresRenew Challenge, using images from our April 2024 trip to Northern Ireland to illustrate one or more of the following:
- Move forward
- Reconstruct
- Renew
- Burgeoning

How wonderful to 1) explore a new library and 2) meet and renew contact with a long-ago friend. 🙂

Hi Anabel – oh gosh … I couldn’t agree more – and a second trip to that library would be special – amazing looking place. I’m jealous!! Cheers – sounds like a great catch up – Hilary

That’s an awesome library sign, Anabel. It was only topped by the smiles of both you and Sam! :D

I should have made Sam go downstairs to be photographed by the Librarian sign! Things you think about too late.

A great photo of the two of you. It’s always good to reconnect with old friends and the library looks lovely.
I have a friend I met 50 years ago, we can go for months or even years without contact but when we do meet up it’s like we only spoke to each other yesterday.

Thanks Eunice, I liked the photo of us both too. It’s interesting how some friendships can just pick up again, and very gratifying when it happens.

We’ll try not to! Not least because I’ll be pushing 100 by then.

That’s the thing about close friendships, it’s like just yesterday when you get together again. I wondered why it’s called The Linen Hall and had a look on the website but couldn’t find anything. I wonder if the building was used as a cloth hall at some time.

I’ve seen something somewhere that suggests it took its name from a previous location.

It’s great you were able to renew your friendship with your former colleague, and what an interesting library to visit!

For some reason I have had to fish you out of spam, Sarah! WordPress is behaving very oddly at the moment. Yes, it was great to see Sam again and tour her library.

That happens with some of the comments I get too – very irritating!

It is! That, and the Anonymous comments which aren’t really, and being unable to comment till you log in when you ARE logged in. Sure those last two must be connected. Infuriating.

Oh yes both those things are especially maddening and I’m sure are connected

I’m glad I’m not the only one this is happening to.

You are right, though it is still in a former linen warehouse.

Belfast was a big linen producer and the library was previously in the old White Linen Hall where linen had been traded. That was demolished to make way for the Victorian City Halls. It’s now in an old linen warehouse but has retained the name. A very suitable building because it’s built for load bearing, whether bales of linen or books!

I love that connection to the past.
